Kings Announce Staff

The Kingsville Kings have announced their staff as they begin play as a 2015-2016 expansion franchise, being the first GMHL Junior ‘A’ team in southwestern Ontario.

Tom Schinkelshoek has been named the Kings President of Operations. Schinkelshoek is a resident of Kingsville and has numerous years of experience with junior hockey. He has served as General Manager of the Tilbury Falcons Jr C Hockey Clubalso serving in the same capacity with the Chatham Sr. ‘A’ Maroons. Schinkelshoek was also a board member serving for12 Years with the Festival of Nations, a portion of that time as Chair. When he moved to Kingsville, Schinkelshoek became involved as a board member and then President of the Kingsville Comets Jr C Hockey Club. He stayed with the team when they moved to Amherstburg to become the Admirals. His duties with the Amherstburg organization were serving as fundraising Chair and Equipment Manager. The Kings are very fortunate to bring Tom Schinkelshoek on board as the team president.

Gary Astalos has been named the team’s first Head Coach / Director of Hockey Operations. Astalos has spent the last three season’s coaching junior hockey in Northern Ontario, most recently guiding the Seguin Huskies to a 73-8-3 record in his two seasons. Under his guidance, 38 players over two years haveadvanced or have been offered contracts to professional, NCAA, ACHA, or higher level of the game.  The Huskies were the 2014 GMHL Regular season champions and 2015 GMHL playoff finalists with Astalos being awarded the 2014 GMHL Coach of the Year. He was also named Northern Division Head Coach for the 2014 and 2015 GMHL All Star Games. Before coaching, he served as team captain for two seasons at Eastern Michigan University receiving his bachelor’s degree in Business Management. With EMU he was invited to two ACHA All-Star Games as well as being a part of the Team USA University Program evaluation camp. Gary played his junior hockey for the Missoula Maulers of the AWHL and Kenai River Brown Bears of the NAHL.

Brandon Contratto has been named as the team’s Associate Head Coach. Contratto comes to the Kings after serving as Head Coach and General Manager of the Parry Sound Islanders of the GMHL. In addition to coaching junior hockey, he is serves as Head Coach for the New Zealand U18 Women’s National Team where he spends his off season. He has also played professional hockey for the Botany Swarm in the NZIHL as well as spending time in Europe and in the United States with the Berkshire Battalion in the FHL. Contratto played his junior hockey in the NAHL with the Southern Minnesota Express and spent four years playing at the University of Michigan, Dearborn. Contrattoalso represented the United States University National Team at the World University Games in 2011 in Erzurum, Turkey.

Martin Jansson has been named General Manager of the Kingsville Kings. Jansson most recently was the Assistant Coach of the Seguin Huskies. He started off his junior hockey career for Molndal Hockey Stars at the age of 16 in the J-18 Elite League in Gothenburg, Sweden before moving on to the Binghamton Senators Jr.A program. After spending time in Binghamton, Jansson signed a professional contract in Norway playing for Bergen IK. He went on to coach the FrolundaIndians AAA Hockey Club which is one of the top organizations in Sweden that has seen many NHL stars play in the program.

David Daniello has been added as the Assistant General Manager / Goalie Coach. Daniello, a longtime coach has served as bench boss for the Portland Junior Pirates AAA Ice Hockey Club and established the Maine Sternmen AAA Ice HockeyClub,serving as President, General Manager, and Head Coach.  While with the Sternmen, he developed and advocated for players as they move to junior and prep hockey.  Most recently, he has served as Player Development Director for the Maine Coast Skaters Association in Rockport, Maine.  He is also the owner of Prospects-Hockey Family Consulting Services, where he works closely with players and families that want to move to the next level in their ice hockey careers. With Kingsville,Daniello will oversee goaltender coaching, the weightlifting program, and handle all medical information for Kings players.

The Kings has recently added Bill Chapman to their staff, who will serve as the Director of Public Relations for the organization. Chapman was media contact and videographer for the Essex 73’s of the Great Lakes Junior C for a number of years assisting that organization grow within the community. He has been a freelance writer in the area for over 25 years and will help shape the long term success of junior hockey in our community.

Matt Cobb has been selected as Director of Scouting with Kevin Totten, Doug Raymond and Alex Vazquez serving as regional scouts.

The Kings will be entering two “prospective player teams” into the Michigan Pre Draft showcase tournament which is scouted by many high level junior and university teams. Interested players who want to try out for the Kings are encouraged to register for this event at

Training camp for the Kings will begin the last weekend of August.  More information, along with news on the GMHL entry draft, player signings, league schedule and more will be announced in the coming weeks.
